Coffee is easily the most exciting drink for me in the world. I have been known to commit the serious crime of going to a bar and ordering coffee! Not kidding. Not that I care what people think! If I feel like a hot cuppa coffee after a nice meal, I go for it. Even if it means I'm the only person in the entire bar drinking something non-alcoholic and hot. But I'm getting distracted here!
Getting back to my love for coffee. I was thrilled to get an invitation from Cafe Coffee Day for the launch of their latest premium coffee, Mysore Royal, in Delhi last week. The 100% Arabica coffee is the creation of Ms. Sunalini Menon, the coffee baroness of India. The lady herself, who believes that "coffee is a way of life", led us through a coffee cupping and food pairing session that helped us explore the rich world of coffee.
We learnt that coffee can be tasted and graded based on factors like aroma, texture, flavour, acidity, sweetness, and finish. Much like wine, I guess. Using the same coffee-water ratio of 1:10, Ms. Menon demonstrated 5 different techniques of brewing coffee:
- Indian filter
- French press
- Stove top
- Siphon (a fascinating and new technique to me), and
- Electric Drip coffee maker
I was amazed to see how the same coffee, with the same coffee-water ratio could taste so different with each method of brewing. While the French Press gave you a delicate and light cup of coffee, highlighting the flavours; the Stove Top and Siphon method gave a bold cup, with a thick texture and strong flavour. The Electrip Drip method resulted in an aromatic, rich and creamy coffee, best enjoyed with some frothy milk.
With its full-bodied richness and caramel-chocolate flavour, Mysore Royal is a great coffee to kickstart your day. The journey into the coffee cup was an immensely enjoyable session. I am totally a coffee-with-milk person, but the end of the session, I began to appreciate the virtues of black coffee!
